Your Land, Your Legacy:

Why Estate Planning is for Every Landowner

Thursday May 26, 2011 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

The Canal Club, 100 Trowbridge Road, Bourne, MA

Your land is a part of your legacy. Deciding what will happen to your land after you are gone may be the most important step you can take as a landowner—not just for your own benefit, but for the benefit of your family, your community, and, of course, your land.

What is estate planning? Your land is likely your most valuable asset.  An estate plan ensures that your assets – including your land – are distributed in a way that will meet the financial and personal needs of you and your family.

You are invited to a free workshop to learn more about deciding the future of your land, featuring:

Emily Kellndorfer, attorney, who will explain estate planning considerations and implications for land ownership and transfers.

Mark Robinson, Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts, & Brendan Annett, Buzzards Bay Coalition, answering your questions about the role of land management and land conservation in estate planning.

Three local landowners from Falmouth, Carver and Rochester sharing their family’s experience with estate planning.

Please RSVP: call Jay Rasku at 978-248-2118 or email info@nqpartnership.org.  Attendees will also be given the new publication “Your Land, Your Legacy” to help guide your estate planning efforts. We look forward to seeing you there!

Mattapoisett Land Trust Scholarship Winner!

Posted May 19th, 2011 in News by Charles Radville

It is with great pleasure that Mattapoisett Land Trust announces the winner of the Blanche B. Perry Scholarship award, for the academic year beginning September 2011. The candidate of choice is Jonathan Wilbur of Mattapoisett Neck Road son of Susan and William Wilbur, and grandson of Rachel Wilbur and the late William Wilbur and Liz and William Field long time supporters of the Mattapoisett Land Trust.

The Mattapoisett Land Trust makes this scholarship contribution available through the Edith Glick Shoolman fund a bequest left to Land Trust. The mission of the Land Trust is to preserve land in order to enrich the quality of life for present and future generations of Mattapoisett residents and visitors.

In his research project on the importance of protecting a salt marsh, Jonathan informs us and quotes his grandfather, Mr. Field, that the “salt marsh is the nursing home of the wild. The marsh gives protection and nutrients to a variety of animals.” Jonathan’s goal is to keep the earth safe. He will be pursuing his academics in the field of environmental protection at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Congratulations to Jonathan Wilbur, Old Rochester Regional High School 2011 graduate.

Your support for Brownell Parcel purchase is critical!

In 2009 we announced that we had an agreement to acquire the 40-acre Dunn Preserve along Old Slough Road north of Angelica Avenue and Pine Island Pond.

With your help we were able to close on the property in June of last year.

In 2010 we were contacted by Linda Brownell to determine whether or not we would be interested in acquiring the 49-acre parcel which lies between the Old Jenny Farm and the Martocci Preserve. Given its location between two of our existing properties we were, of course, interested.

This land is designated as a “Supporting Natural Landscape” by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program for the most environmentally sensitive and important “Core Habitat” of Pine Island Pond.

We conducted a tour of this parcel in February of this year.

This parcel fits like a puzzle piece into our preservation map (see image), and will allow extension and additions to our trail system. An existing trail runs roughly parallel to the existing Hiller Trail on the adjacent Martocci Preserve, and passes a large blueberry orchard used in the past by the Brownells.

We signed a purchase and sale agreement in  September 2010 committing us to purchase the parcel this coming June.

You can assist in the purchase of this critical property by preserving one of the approximately 1500 blueberry bushes for $100, or making any other donation:

  • by accessing our  secure DONATE page and making a specific note about the Brownell purchase in the “memorial” area
  • by contacting us at info@mattlandtrust.org
  • by mailing a check with a note about this purchase to the Mattapoisett Land Trust, Inc., P.O. Box 31, Mattapoisett, MA 02739.
  • by donating securities (contact Edward Jones Investments, Attn. Ron Ellis, 53 County Rd. Mattapoisett, MA 02739)

Thank you for your interest and support!
