In the afterglow of the first Earth Day, a small group of concerned citizens met in 1974 to create an environmental organization for Mattapoisett. They wanted to raise the awareness of the community to the threats they saw to the local environment and they hoped to set aside some open space in town for the enjoyment of all.
For over 40 years the mission of the MLT has remained largely unchanged. Volunteers committed to improving the quality of life in Mattapoisett still do most of our work. To do the work, however, the volunteers require financial support from a much broader base of members and friends.
Specifically, the MLT works in three areas that require financial support:
- ACQUISITION We are eager to take donations of land that will help us fulfill our mission, but often these critical lands are only available through purchase. We usually identify one particular parcel for such fund-raising campaigns.
- STEWARDSHIP Our highest profile properties, Dunseith Gardens with Salty the Seahorse, the Old Aucoot District, Dexter Mill and the Munro Waterfront, require ongoing maintenance and lawn care. Other properties need occasional tree removal or tree maintenance, Finally, we must finance our ongoing war with invasives that are detrimental to our native species.
- EDUCATION We want to encourage children, youth and adults to experience the natural beauty of Mattapoisett. In the past we have paid for student field trips to our properties or to Nasketucket Bay State Reservation but we have also paid for public lectures to educate the public in the wonders of the natural world. And we try to sneak a little education into every issue of The Heron.
Our mission extends to future generations which makes the MLT an appropriate recipient of gifts to honor or to memorialize your loved ones. We will always acknowledge such gifts in the subsequent issue of The Heron to inform the public of your generosity.
Should you want to make a generous gift of common stock or other securities, please visit the Donate Stocks page for detailed information.
Please consider talking to the MLT about estate donations, a thoughtful way to help preserve the environment for many generations to come. Tax laws are changing and many programs can be set up today.
