An Open Space Opportunity

We don’t have a major land acquisition currently in negotiation, but we believe that all of our members and friends should be aware of an important land protection effort that will be part of the Town Meeting warrant this May. We hope that you will take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the project and that you will attend Town Meeting to add your voice and vote in favor.

The Buzzards Bay Coalition has worked on the Nasketucket Bay Land Conservation Project for the past couple of years and they are now trying to finalize the funding for the project. The project will protect nearly 400 acres of farmland, forest and coastal wetlands in Mattapoisett and Fairhaven: 263 acres in Mattapoisett and 135 acres in Fairhaven. The Coalition will hold a conservation restriction (CR) on the farm fields to prevent their future development, but ownership of the other acreage will go the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation or to the Mattapoisett Conservation Commission.

This is a very large deal valued at $6 million. The Coalition has done a remarkable job lining up state and federal sources of funds but they are asking the two communities involved to each contribute $200,000 (3.3%) for the closing in December. The Coalition is also intending to raise $150,000 from private sources which will likely include a donation from the Land Trust. We have not yet determined the size of our contribution.

We are not yet certain as to the exact nature of the funding request that will be included in the Town Meeting warrant in May but we ask you to watch for announcements and check the Town’s, as well as the MLT’s, website. We have also posted MORE INFORMATION (PDF) about the project on our website, including maps, so that you can see how it complements other land protection efforts in the area. Thank you in advance for helping with this important land protection effort. We hope to see you at Town Meeting.

MLT plans to honor volunteers

tee back MLT plans to honor volunteersContinuing on its mission to preserve and protect open space for your recreation, exploration and enjoyment, your Mattapoisett Land Trust depends on many resources.

From membership fees to endowments and major donations of land, the all volunteer Board of Directors uses these resources judiciously. From expanding the acres of protected properties to developing new trails and maintaining existing ones we can sometime stretch what is made available.

One of our greatest and most appreciated assets is a band of enthusiastic volunteers.

Scouts from our local troop have cleared and built trails, recreation areas and even bridges.
Members of our community help out in a many ways, from staffing our booth at Harbor Days, to assisting in clean-ups and general maintenance.
It is this background activity, probably invisible to you, that keeps protected lands open and available for your use.

This winter we will be honoring this selfless segment of our organization.
The event will be held at the Mattapoisett Congregational Church hall, 7 Church Street, on Saturday, February 9 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. There will be a nominal fee to cover expenses.

RSVP to info@mattlandtrust.org with your number of attendees.
Join us as we let these indispensable folks know our deep appreciation for their work. Who knows? You may find inspiration to jump in yourself!
